''Situated at the height of 996 m. above sea level on the south bank of the Ravi River, just 56 km from Dalhousie ,the ancient Pahari capital was founded in 920 A.D. by Raja Sahil Verma, who named it after his favourite daughter Champavati.
Chamba valley is noted for the magnificence of it's scenery-touching the fringe of the Shivaliks and having three well-defined snowy ranges, the Dauladhar, constituting the outer Himalayas, the Pir Panjal or the mid Himalayas, and the Zanskar range or the inner Himalayas.

PLACES AROUND CHAMBA
Lakshmi Narayan Temple - To the north of the palace at Chamba, there is a group of six stone Sikhara temples arranged in a row from north to south. Three of these temples are dedicated to Vishnu and three to Shiva.
Chaugan - At the heart of Chamba is the Chaugan, a sprawling grassy concourse, also serving as a promenade, which is predictably enough, the hub of much of the activity in town.
Bhuri Singh Museum - This museum was named after Raja Bhuri Singh of Chamba, and showcases intriguing relics of Chamba's past, which include murals, paintings, stone carvings, and copper plates.
Champawati Temple - Close to the royal palace at Chamba, there is a stone sikhara temple dedicated to Goddess Champavati. Tradition holds that the town of Chamba was named after her.
Brajeshwari Devi - Temple Nearby the Laxmi Narayan Temple is the Brajreshwari Devi temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga.
Rangmahal - The Rangmahal or the Old Palace is one of the most visited places of Himachal Pradesh. It also has the Himachal Emporium, from where the travelers can buy handicraft items.
Chowgan Chowgan - is the grassy promenade at the heart of the town and is the focus for local festivals.

In winter, the temperature gets very low because of cold winds, when heavy woolens are required. It is hot in summer and the temperature rises up to 38 degrees

Air: Chamba is not connected directly by Air. The nearest airport is at Gaggal (Dist. Kangra). From Gaggal to Chamba transportation is easily available.
Rail: Chamba is not connected directly by train. The nearest railway-station is Chakki-Bank and Pathankot. From Chakki-Bank and Pathankot to Chamba regular bus service is available.
Road: The bus station in Chamba is located near the Chowgan. The bus service from Chamba to Bharmaur (3½ hours), Dharamshala (10 hours), Khajjiar (1½ hours), Dalhousie (3 hours), and to Pathankot (6 hours) is very good.
